The Great Society
The Great Society was a set of programs started by President Lyndon B. Johnson. They were initiated in the Congress and had goals of social reforms. They included Medicare, education funding and Medicaid. Programs Civil Rights In 1964, there were urban riots caused by African-American due to racial discriminations. They had a Civil Rights Movement and one of the Great Society successes was putting the requests of the ââ¬Å"civil rights movementâ⬠into law. In 1965, four Civil Rights Acts were enacted. Civil Rights Act of 1964 forbade discrimination of public accommodation and acquiring of jobs. The Voting Rights Act enabled African-Americans to vote and register. Civil Rights Act of 1965 forbade Housing discrimination and constitutionally protected Native Americans. The Immigration and Nationality Services Act of 1965 did away with ââ¬Å"the national-origin quotas in immigration lawâ⬠These acts are still in the U.S laws and are being enacted like The voting Rights Act, The Immigration and Nationality Services Act of 1965 since it is everybody right to vote. Some acts are not effective since some African-Americans today are still discriminated from jobs and acquiring of houses. War on Poverty There were antipoverty programs under Opportunity Act aimed at helping Native Americans who were poor (Moss 121). Raising incomes of the working poor was not the solution to fighting poverty, but to give job training, community development and education. Almost three billion U.S dollars were spent fighting poverty. The Great Society was successful in fighting poverty because youths benefit ed from the programs by developing marketable skills (Weintraub 8). Children from poor families could not get an education due to lack of school fees but upon the introduction of Great Societyââ¬â¢s aid, they were able to learn. It provided aid to public schools to purchase materials and to come up with education programs aimed for poor children. The Higher Education Facilities Act of 1963 gave college aid for a period of five years. It provided more college libraries, technical institutes and classrooms. The education program increased money given to U.S universities. It created scholarships and low-interest loans, and started Teacher Corps to give teachers in poor areas of U.S. These aids and initiatives are present even today. Health One of the Great Society successes was providing Medicare and Medicaid in 1965. There were no health care programs for the old. Under the Social Security Act, Medicare was authorized. It provided funding for medical costs of Americans who were old (Moss 15). It was specifically for Americans over the age of sixty five. Medicaid program gave medical care to all ages. This continues till present in hospital for those who cannot afford. Cultural Centers The Great Society started giving aid to arts facilities and national cultural so that they could complete their projects. It was successful in establishing cultural centers because it led to the establishment of John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts for commemorating John F. Kennedy who was assassinated (Lyndon 15). There was expansion of art museum called Smithsonian Institution which was funded under great society. Currently it has modern arts. Tr ansportation The great Society led to a unification of transportation agencies to Department of Transportation in 1965. There was establishment of The Urban Mass Transportation Act which funded large-scale private or public rail projects with 375 U.S Dollars to States and Cities. This led to the creation of the Urban Mass Transit Administration now referred to as Federal Transit Administration. Consumer Protection Johnson elected Esther Peterson to be president assistant to look into the customerââ¬â¢s affairs in 1964. For example, you may have to examine two different books from one and the same author, compare countriesââ¬â¢ GDPââ¬â¢s, analyze different economic, social trends and behavior, etc. As you can see, no matter whether you are studying literature, economic or social studies, sooner or later you will have to write a contrast or comparative essay. However, although a lot of universities and colleges acknowledge the contrast essay and the comparative one as one and the same thing, you should be careful when writing one because sometimes you will be asked to only contrast two different things or compare them and sometimes you may be asked to do both. The question here is how to write a contrast essay? There are of course some useful tips when writing a contrast essay. As any type of essay, the contrast or comparative one consists of introduction, body paragraphs and conclusion. Introduction of a contrast essay As you have probably heard before, in the introduction part you need to state your thesis, which should be strong and clear. It is also good to provide some basic information on the topic which is going to be contrasted or compared. How can you decide which one is the best option and what exactly will be your thesis? Since both countries have their advantages and are wonderful places for visit, you can state in your thesis that it is the time of the year that is the most important when making a decision. You elaborate furthermore with at least three points of contrast; for example, if you are traveling during summer the best option would be Spain because of its wonderful beaches while in Rome (the capital of Italy) this time of the period is very hot and not suitable for sightseeing. The next point can be whether you research for local festivals and other cultural events in the different time periods of the year, and the third one can be the financial side of your possible future trip. And here you have the contrast or comparative essay introduction stating your thesis and points of contrast and comparison in a clear and simple way. It is not easy to find the thesis and points of comparison on your own so you will have to research well in order for your essay to sound valid and trustworthy. Also, do not be afraid to change your mind if, while researching which place is best to visit, it turns out that it is not the one you initially planned; then just simply write the essay from your new point of view. As long as the paper is researched well and sounds reasonable, logical and impartial you will have an excellent contrast essay. Body of a contrast essay We move on with the body of the contrast essay. As mentioned above, we elaborate furthermore what we have stated in the beginning or introduction of our essay. There is one specific detail when it comes to writing the body of the contrast essay; you can choose whether to write two body paragraphs only or using the so called whole-to-whole comparison or contrast (one of the paragraphs is all about comparison and the other one is all about contrast), or you can use a different paragraph for each point you have stated in the introduction. Very often this will be provided in the instructions. Also. you can add one paragraph with competitive arguments. However, there is such a circumstance that most people resort to in order to escape the embarrassment of failure and it is called self-handicapping. Leondari and Gonida (2007) summarize the definition of term saying, ââ¬Å"it involves creating obstacles to successful performance on tasks that the individual considers importantâ⬠. Such obstacles are influenced by factors such as age, gender and self-perception. Just like in many circumstances, age makes a difference in how people react. In the case of self-handicapping, it has been found out that younger children are less inclined to self-handicap compared to older children. According to a study performed on a population of 702 students in Greece, there is no signif icant difference in self-handicapping among the elementary and high school students involved in the experiment. Initially, the researchers assumed that high school students will use self-handicapping strategies more than elementary students because the ââ¬Å"high school environment is more competitive and places more emphasis on performance demandsâ⬠(Leondari & Gonida, 2007). Nevertheless, their study proved the supposition wrong. What the researchers have found though was that, task goals significantly affected the result of self-handicapping strategies. Narcolepsy Narcolepsy is a permanent sleep disorder that gets worse with age. It is estimated that about 40,000 to 135,000 people in the United States have narcolepsy. (Narcolepsy, 2002). Most people who have narcolepsy are often times misdiagnosed because the symptoms, especially if noticed at the beginning stages, are very similar to other sleep disorders. Some of the symptoms that go along with narcolepsy are excessive sleepiness, especially during the daytime or when sleep is inappropriate, cataplexy which is when a person suddenly looses control of their muscles, sleep paralysis which is when the person is unable to move for a short period of time after they wake up from sleep, and hypnagogic hallucinations which is very vivid dreams, often experienced minutes after falling asleep. (Wunder 2002). For a person with narcolepsy, the message about when to sleep and be awake often arrive at the brain at the wrong time or wrong place, causing them to fall asleep while their emotions are high or even during physical activities. According to Margan (2003), narcoleptic patients have a shortage of neurons which produce excitatory neurotransmitters such as hypocretin and orexin. With less of these neurotransmitters, the signals for when to sleep and when to be awake is sent at the wrong times. Scientists have found that narcoleptic patients lack a chemical in the brain called hypocretin. Hypocretin helps to regulate sleep and stimulates arousal. It was also discovered that the number of neurons which secrete hypocretin is also reduced. (Wunder 2002). It is uncertain why these are missing.
