The Guatemala sinkhole was intensified in light of the fact that Guatemala City was based ashore made up of many meters of a volcanic material called pumice. The pumice in the area was handily dissolved on the grounds that it was as of late stored and free also called unconsolidated stone. At the point when the funnel burst the overabundance water was effectively ready to disintegrate away the pumice and debilitate the structure of the ground. George Grosz Dada Essay Example For Students

George Grosz Dada Essay George Grosz once said, à Ã‚ ²Ãƒ Ã¢â‚¬Å¡Ãƒâ€˜Ã… ¡I thought the war would never end. And perhaps it never did, either.à Ã‚ ²Ãƒ Ã¢â‚¬Å¡Ãƒâ€˜Ã…“ Grosz took his feelings of the war and expressed them through his crude caricatures, illustrations, paintings, and poems. Grosz was an important member of the Dada movement. He engaged in touchy subjects during World War I such as: the deceitfulness of the government, prostitution, fat businessmen, sex crimes, Nazism, poverty, wounded soldiers, and other terror during the war. Grosz was born Georg Ehrenfried Gross in July of 1893, in Berlin. He received his education at the Dresden Art Academy. He first started his famous caricatures in 1910 which he had published in a few German journals. He graduated with honors in 1911. From 1912-1917 he continued his artistic education at a school that was attached to the Museum of Applied Arts in Berlin (nga.gov). In 1913 he started to develop his skill of rapid sketching in a class he took where models would change their poses every few minutes. That class encouraged him to draw even more and so he began to carry a small sketchbook everywhere he went. He often enjoyed sketching people on busy streets of Berlin. His later work was usually done with just pen and ink. Sometimes he would develop them further with watercolors. For example in his 1920 illustration known as à Ã‚ ²Ãƒ Ã¢â‚¬Å¡Ãƒâ€˜Ã… ¡The Convict,à Ã‚ ²Ãƒ Ã¢â‚¬Å¡Ãƒâ€˜Ã…“ which some say is a prisoner in his cell (fig. 1). He also used oils and he even w rote poetry. Grosz was enlisted in the military in Berlin in 1914. While in the Berlin army he met John Heartifeld and Wieland Herzfelde. Later on Grosz and Heartfield collaborated many times. Grosz was released six months later due to minor head and hand injuries. In 1916 as an antinationalistic protest he changed his name, he wanted it to be a more Americanized name. He and Heartfield did this together. During his time at the war he continued to draw. According to Grosz: I drew soldiers without noses; war cripples with crab-like limbs of steel; two medical orderlies tying a violent infantryman up in a horse blanket; a one-armed soldier using his good hand to salute a heavily bemedalled lady who had just passed him a biscuit; a colonel, his fly wide open, embracing a nurse; a hospital orderly emptying a bucket full of pieces of human flesh down a pit. (Autobiography) In 1917, Grosz began protesting with Hearield against the German wartime propaganda campaign against their allies. Grosz created a series of anti-war drawings such as Fit for Active Service, drawn in 1918 (fig. 2). The illustration is of a pretty well fed doctor who is examining a skeleton and declares him as fit for duty. Grosz was later re-enlisted in the army in 1917 and shortly after he tried to commit suicide. He was normally known as a very kind man but when he got into alcohol he turned violent and suicidal. Although he was very busy during the war he still found time to draw. Grosz was especially angry with the war. When drawing his caricatures, Grosz seemed to be especially interested in exaggerating peopleà Ã‚ ²Ãƒ Ã¢â‚¬Å¡Ã¢â€ž ¢s flaws. Grosz was extremely pessimistic about humanity. He never made anyone look particularly handsome or beautiful in his caricatures. Common subjects in his caricatures are fat businessmen smoking cigars (fig. 3). In 1919 Grosz and Herzfelde collaborated and created photomontages as well as satirical journals, which were later banned by authorities. Grosz joined the German Communist party in 1919 and then in 1924 he became a leader of Berlinà Ã‚ ²Ãƒ Ã¢â‚¬Å¡Ã¢â€ž ¢s Red Chair group. In later years during the rise of the Nazià Ã‚ ²Ãƒ Ã¢â‚¬Å¡Ã¢â€ž ¢s he fled to America where he eventually became an American citizen. While in America he exhibited some of his work. He also began to create new pieces but they were far different from his earlier pieces and not as well liked. The new pieces were a lot more conservative and had a very little amount of anger that was shown in his older illustrations. Grosz returned to Berlin in 1959 but shortly thereafter he died from the effects of falling down a flight of stairs after he had been drinking. .ud12e4bf0dab7fe91c8d36c2c80bd10ee , .ud12e4bf0dab7fe91c8d36c2c80bd10ee .postImageUrl , .ud12e4bf0dab7fe91c8d36c2c80bd10ee .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .ud12e4bf0dab7fe91c8d36c2c80bd10ee , .ud12e4bf0dab7fe91c8d36c2c80bd10ee:hover , .ud12e4bf0dab7fe91c8d36c2c80bd10ee:visited , .ud12e4bf0dab7fe91c8d36c2c80bd10ee:active { border:0!important; } .ud12e4bf0dab7fe91c8d36c2c80bd10ee .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .ud12e4bf0dab7fe91c8d36c2c80bd10ee { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .ud12e4bf0dab7fe91c8d36c2c80bd10ee:active , .ud12e4bf0dab7fe91c8d36c2c80bd10ee:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .ud12e4bf0dab7fe91c8d36c2c80bd10ee .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .ud12e4bf0dab7fe91c8d36c2c80bd10ee .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .ud12e4bf0dab7fe91c8d36c2c80bd10ee .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .ud12e4bf0dab7fe91c8d36c2c80bd10ee .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .ud12e4bf0dab7fe91c8d36c2c80bd10ee:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .ud12e4bf0dab7fe91c8d36c2c80bd10ee .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .ud12e4bf0dab7fe91c8d36c2c80bd10ee .ud12e4bf0dab7fe91c8d36c2c80bd10ee-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .ud12e4bf0dab7fe91c8d36c2c80bd10ee:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Effects of the Dada on Punk Rock EssayGrosz was a very important member of the Dada movement. How to Write a Contrast Essay

How to Write a Contrast Essay How to Write a Contrast Essay In your career as a student you will no doubt encounter with a task of writing a contrast essay, as they are quite common. As you can guess from its title, a contrast essay is all about contrasting. Still, it is not that simple to write this type of essay as it may seem from the beginning. Usually, you can guess from the title of the essay that you are dealing with a contrast or comparative essay. For example, you may have to examine two different books from one and the same author, compare countries’ GDP’s, analyze different economic, social trends and behavior, etc. As you can see, no matter whether you are studying literature, economic or social studies, sooner or later you will have to write a contrast or comparative essay. However, although a lot of universities and colleges acknowledge the contrast essay and the comparative one as one and the same thing, you should be careful when writing one because sometimes you will be asked to only contrast two different things or compare them and sometimes you may be asked to do both. The question here is how to write a contrast essay? There are of course some useful tips when writing a contrast essay. As any type of essay, the contrast or comparative one consists of introduction, body paragraphs and conclusion. Introduction of a contrast essay As you have probably heard before, in the introduction part you need to state your thesis, which should be strong and clear. In case of the contrast or comparative essay you should state clearly the topics you are going to contrast or compare, or both. It is also good to provide some basic information on the topic which is going to be contrasted or compared. In your introduction it will be very useful to add a thesis argument and at least three points of contrast or comparison. You will elaborate them further in the body of the essay. Let’s say that you have to write an essay on the subject which country is better for vacation: Spain or Italy. How can you decide which one is the best option and what exactly will be your thesis? Since both countries have their advantages and are wonderful places for visit, you can state in your thesis that it is the time of the year that is the most important when making a decision. You elaborate furthermore with at least three points of contrast; for example, if you are traveling during summer the best option would be Spain because of its wonderful beaches while in Rome (the capital of Italy) this time of the period is very hot and not suitable for sightseeing. The next point can be whether you research for local festivals and other cultural events in the different time periods of the year, and the third one can be the financial side of your possible future trip. And here you have the contrast or comparative essay introduction stating your thesis and points of contrast and comparison in a clear and simple way. It is not easy to find the thesis and points of comparison on your own so you will have to research well in order for your essay to sound valid and trustworthy. Also, do not be afraid to change your mind if, while researching which place is best to visit, it turns out that it is not the one you initially planned; then just simply write the essay from your new point of view. As long as the paper is researched well and sounds reasonable, logical and impartial you will have an excellent contrast essay. Body of a contrast essay We move on with the body of the contrast essay. As mentioned above, we elaborate furthermore what we have stated in the beginning or introduction of our essay. There is one specific detail when it comes to writing the body of the contrast essay; you can choose whether to write two body paragraphs only or using the so called whole-to-whole comparison or contrast (one of the paragraphs is all about comparison and the other one is all about contrast), or you can use a different paragraph for each point you have stated in the introduction. Very often this will be provided in the instructions. Also. you can add one paragraph with competitive arguments. If you decide to do that, however, you have to be extremely careful because all the counterarguments have to be flawed. It will be very useful if you make a structure on your body paragraph prior to writing it. The most common organization structures consist of the so-called block method or subject-by-subject comparison followed by contrast and point-by-point. Use transitional words and phrases such as similar, on the other hand, compared to, just as, unlike, on the contrary, in contrast, etc. depending if you are looking for comparison or contrast. Conclusion of a contrast essay The last part of the contrast essay is the conclusion. The main purpose of the conclusion is to restate your thesis and summarize the presented points of comparison or contrast. It has to be strong with clear sentences and message. Always proofread your essay.

How Age,Gender and Self-Perception Affect Self-Handicapping Essay

How Age,Gender and Self-Perception Affect Self-Handicapping - Essay Example The matter has caused so much attention from psychologists because of its perceived importance in helping create better responses from students and employees alike. Therefore, there have been much studies conducted to further understand the implications of self-handicapping in schools. In addition, more studies are being employed to consider more variables such as culture, setting and other factors. As more researches have been conducted, proven and accepted regarding the matter on the factors such as age, gender and self-perception, this paper will deal particularly on the aforementioned three components affecting self-handicaps in addition to the definition of the term. This paper will show how age affects self-handicapping. In addition, it will also show that women have been found to be more resilient and therefore able to escape self-handicapping more than men. Lastly, the paper will also look deeper into how self-perception affects the tendency of self-handicapping. First and fo remost, it is the aim of this paper to expound on what self-handicap is all about. According to McCrea and Flamm (2011), self-handicapping is â€Å"an anticipatory self-protective strategy in which individuals create or claim obstacles to success prior to an important performance to excuse potential failure†. ... Understandably, individuals tend to take pride in themselves regardless of their abilities and capabilities so that they would want to be appreciated most of the time especially when they perform well. Nevertheless, failure is inevitable even to the best of the best. However, there is such a circumstance that most people resort to in order to escape the embarrassment of failure and it is called self-handicapping. Leondari and Gonida (2007) summarize the definition of term saying, â€Å"it involves creating obstacles to successful performance on tasks that the individual considers important†. Such obstacles are influenced by factors such as age, gender and self-perception. Just like in many circumstances, age makes a difference in how people react. In the case of self-handicapping, it has been found out that younger children are less inclined to self-handicap compared to older children. According to a study performed on a population of 702 students in Greece, there is no signif icant difference in self-handicapping among the elementary and high school students involved in the experiment. Initially, the researchers assumed that high school students will use self-handicapping strategies more than elementary students because the â€Å"high school environment is more competitive and places more emphasis on performance demands† (Leondari & Gonida, 2007). Nevertheless, their study proved the supposition wrong. What the researchers have found though was that, task goals significantly affected the result of self-handicapping strategies. This means that task goals are more of a motivation to one’s accomplishment in relation to age rather than age alone as a factor influencing self-handicapping. From the

Data Collection and Analysis - Essay Example Depending on the need, availability of information and expected outputs one or combination of more than one methods for data collection and analysis needs to be adopted. Following are some of the methods for data collection - 1. Primary Research - this method involves collecting information from first hand research done by other individuals / teams / groups and using it to draw inferences with due references to the original research work. 2. Secondary Research - this method involves collecting information which has been derived or inferred from some other primary research work. This may involve articles, secondary research reports, published opinions, etc. among others. 3. Survey - this is a widely known method of data collection by conducting a survey over a sample target population and analyzing the results in order to get first hand information on the research work. 5. Interviews - interviews are another form of collecting information from relevant target population and use the information captured to satisfy the research objectives. Interviews can be structured or unstructured and can be conducted in person or on phone or video conference. 6. Delphi Method - this is a method for collection of expert opinion in the area in which research is being conducted. Experts consulted should be credible and knowledgeable people in the area of the research. For each of the data collection met... However, the above list captures the most commonly used data collection methods. Pros and Cons For each of the data collection methods stated above, there are pros and cons of adopting them in a research project as well as appropriateness for specific type of research projects. Following is a brief discussion on the same - 1. Primary Research - this is a good method of data collection as it provides valuable data points for the research without actually conducting a firsthand research. This method is useful where there are constraints on either time or resources for conducting fully fledged research activities. However, this is still a substitute for actual research. Information available may not exactly match the conditions needed for the research. Hence, there may be compromises or assumptions to be made while using this form of research. This may lead to inaccuracies in research results. 2. Secondary Research - similar to primary research, secondary research may also used in cases of constraints on resources or time. Many times, this form of research is used as a literature review for first step in a research project to provide rough idea on the research topic. This provides important data points which may be useful for designing the actual research, tools used and analysis of data. Again, the disadvantages are that the secondary source information may have inherent inaccuracies introduced while drawing inferences and conclusions from the primary research sources. 3. Survey - this is a popular data collection tool used while conducting business research or market research. The survey results and their analysis provide first hand information directly from the main sources and are not dependent on inferences or

Woman Hollering Creek - Short story Essay Example for Free

Woman Hollering Creek Short story Essay Woman Hollering Creek and Other Stories is a book of short stories published in 1991 by San Antonio-based Mexican-American writer Sandra Cisneros. The collection reflects Cisneross experience of being surrounded by American influences while still being familially bound to her Mexican heritage as she grew-up north of the Mexico-US border. Woman Hollering Creek and Other Stories These tales focus on the social role of women, and their relationships with the men and other women in their lives. The majority of the characters are stereotypes: men embody machismo while women are naà ¯ve and generally weak. Cisneros focuses on three feminine clichà ©s: the passive virgin, sinful seductress, and traitorous mother.[1] Not properly belonging to either Mexico or America, the Chicana protagonists earnestly search for their identity, only to discover abuse and shattered dreams. Apart from focusing on these issues of struggling females, Cisneros simultaneously develops the readers sensitivity towards the lives of immigrants. First edition cover Author The vignettes are quite short on average; the longest is 29 pages, while the shortest is fewer than five paragraphs. Despite such limited space, Cisneros experiments with daring poetic prose in her storytelling; for example, each story presents a new character with a distinct literary voice and style. Such writing has earned her the title of an accomplished Chicana poet, with the added credentials of her published books of poetry My Wicked Wicked Ways (1987) and Loose Woman (1994).[2]

Narcolepsy Essay -- Sleep Disorders Sleeping Papers

Narcolepsy Narcolepsy is a permanent sleep disorder that gets worse with age. It is estimated that about 40,000 to 135,000 people in the United States have narcolepsy. (Narcolepsy, 2002). Most people who have narcolepsy are often times misdiagnosed because the symptoms, especially if noticed at the beginning stages, are very similar to other sleep disorders. Some of the symptoms that go along with narcolepsy are excessive sleepiness, especially during the daytime or when sleep is inappropriate, cataplexy which is when a person suddenly looses control of their muscles, sleep paralysis which is when the person is unable to move for a short period of time after they wake up from sleep, and hypnagogic hallucinations which is very vivid dreams, often experienced minutes after falling asleep. (Wunder 2002). For a person with narcolepsy, the message about when to sleep and be awake often arrive at the brain at the wrong time or wrong place, causing them to fall asleep while their emotions are high or even during physical activities. According to Margan (2003), narcoleptic patients have a shortage of neurons which produce excitatory neurotransmitters such as hypocretin and orexin. With less of these neurotransmitters, the signals for when to sleep and when to be awake is sent at the wrong times. Scientists have found that narcoleptic patients lack a chemical in the brain called hypocretin. Hypocretin helps to regulate sleep and stimulates arousal. It was also discovered that the number of neurons which secrete hypocretin is also reduced. (Wunder 2002). It is uncertain why these are missing. Essay on Rainforests of the Ocean - 942 Words

Rainforests of the Ocean Coral reefs are large societies of small living organisms. They are made up of millions of various creatures including fish, starfish, sea urchins, and so much more. Despite the fact that coral reefs make up fewer than one percentage of the Earth’s surface, coral reefs are still one of the greatest diversified ecosystems in the world due to the creatures that live in and around the reefs. Coral reefs are located in shallow, warm waters in the tropics around the Bahamas, in the Red Sea, and near the Hawaiian islands. The largest coral reefs are the Great Barrier Reef, the Red Sea Coral Reef, and the New Caledonia Barrier Reef. Because coral can only grow where a light source is abundant and frequent, the coral also offers a great source of sunlight for the zooxanthellae. (â€Å"Coral, Carbon Dioxide, and Calcification†) Polyps are able to reproduce by both asexual reproduction and sexual reproduction. In asexual reproduction, the polyps are clones of each-other. In other words, the resulting polyps or colonies are identical to the original. The two types of asexual reproduction are budding and fragmentation. When a coral polyp reaches a large size, it divides, therefore generating an identical new coral polyp. Fragmentation, on the other hand is when a portion of a colony cracks off and creates a different colony. Fragmentation can happen due to external factors, like a storm or fishing materials. In addition, coral polyps can breed by sexual reproduction, either externally or internally, depending on the variety of the coral polyp. In external fertilization, coral polyps let out large masses of eggs while other polyps release small parcels of sperm. Once all the eggs and sperm float upward, the eggs are fertilized and free swimming larvae are produced. Within a few days or weeks, most larvae becom e coral polyps. Plato And Aristotle s Views On Modern Political Thought...

Philosophers have pondered what makes for an ideal state since antiquity. In fact, the ideas theorized by the ancient Greek philosophers Plato and Aristotle over two millennia ago on this subject still resonate strongly today, influencing modern political thought and regime construction. Plato contends the ideal state is one ruled by a class of guardians, or â€Å"philosopher-kings†. These philosopher-kings are selected to rule because they are best fit for the responsibility. Aristotle, a pupil of Plato, acknowledges and agrees with Plato on the point that states ruled by philosopher-kings would be ideal states, but adds such states are simply not reasonable. Instead, Aristotle advocates for rule by â€Å"polity†: a constitutional government†¦show more content†¦Likewise, children born of guardians deemed unfit to be future guardians are relegated to one of the other classes. By creating a system of specialization in which ability solely determines the citizen s’ duties, Plato ensures those who govern his city will not be the beneficiaries of parental and/or class nepotism. For this reason, the city’s political health is protected from the deleterious effects of an inefficient ruling class. This class structure is wholly unconventional, but necessary in Plato’s ideal city. This is due to his position on the equity, or lack thereof, between humans; some people, be it by nature or nurture, are more competent than others and the most competent should rule over those less so for the benefit of the whole. However, Plato knows this system will be fraught if it ignores base human desire. Citizens will not willingly accept being corralled into specific societal roles, especially if they think those roles are unjust or beneath them. Plato’s system cannot work without a â€Å"noble lie†. The noble lie promulgated to the citizens of Plato’s city relies on a sort of divine meddling. It is clear that Enron s behavior in the California energy crisis was unethical. In 1996 a bill was passed to deregulate electricity. This deregulated system was an odd compromise. Enron made sure this compromise would be put all on California. Enron would create these arbitrage opportunities in which they would create profits above and beyond the norm. ...No Fate, No Bad Luck, No Excuses, Simply Man, His Choices, And The

...No fate, no bad luck, no excuses, simply man, his choices, and the situation in which he finds himself... -Anonymous The concepts of existence and human freedom have been presented by Jean-Paul Sartre in his book entitled Being and Nothingness. However, Sartre also presents other related concepts, such as bad faith which has been referred to as a device that protects us from the anguish of realizing that we are freer than we like to think we are. Analyzing his examples and my own, Sartre's bad faith theory will hopefully be illumined and broken down. He believes bad faith is to not acknowledge one's right to make choices and be more than what you are. His view however is flawed in its complexity, there are loopholes and rules that should not be there, his stereotypes are too chiseled. But before delving into bad faith I would like to give some background on several of the philosophies I found while reading his book. In his early philosophic work -- Being and Nothingness -- Sartre conceived humans as beings who create their own world by rebelling against authority and by accepting personal responsibility for their actions; unaided by society, traditional morality, or religious faith. Distinguishing between human existence and the non-human world, he maintained that human existence is characterized by nothingness, that is, by the capacity to negate and rebel. By distinguishing between two things, you create this idea of nothingness. His theory of existential psychoanalysis asserted the inescapable responsibility of all individuals for their own decisions and made the recognition of one's absolute freedom of choice the necessary condition for authentic human existence. This freedom of choice is the root of Sartre's bad faith theory. To be what you are, to recognize what you are... but not only be that. "It is best to choose and to examine one determined attitude which is essential to human reality and determined attitude which is essential to human reality and which is such that consciousness instead of directing its negation outward turns it toward itself. This attitude, it seems to me, is bad faith" (87). Thus, choice is the epitome of Sartre's bad faith philosophy, and a controversial one at that. I agree with his concept of bad faith, but he does take it too far in my philosophical opinion, but I will get to that after I introduce Sartre's point of view. Let us take for example the waiter in the caf?. "His movement is quick and forward, a little too precise, a little too rapid" (101). Sartre is convinced that the man is playing at being a waiter in a caf?. The waiter has the duties of being a waiter: getting up early, sweeping the caf?, starting the coffee pots. Because of these obligations, the waiter takes on a certain persona, which really makes his being a waiter. In other words, he accepts this responsibility as a sort of costume that he can not take off. His whole life is affected because of a choice he made that he now lives by. Without realizing that he is in bad faith and can choose to do things differently, he is by default not living in good faith, being free to choose how to live. This case of the waiter is definitely one of Sartre's more controversial examples because the waiter could ultimately be in good faith by choosing to be a free-minded waiter who knows he is more than just a waiter, while he is working. People ta ke many things for granted; the clean air in Santa Cruz, or the freedom of choice in any situation. I became confused about bad faith when I began to consider the individual who fully takes the responsibility of being a free-minded, choice making individual. Is this person in bad faith because they are being "good faith"? To clarify, let's pretend Descartes (pretend Descartes knows of Sartre and his philosophies) tries so hard to not be in bad faith that he is the opposite of bad faith, he is by default in bad faith because he is living a life of nothing but good faith. Sartre hints on this himself, "We must note in fact that the project of bad faith must be
